What is Dyslexia?

What is Dyslexia and why be concerned for something that doesn't affect us directly? Statistics show that one in every four children is affected by Dyslexia, and that is such a staggering number. Society, but more specifically, our educational system, isn't ready or even capable of dealing with so many children. In fact our education system doesn't currently have in place, any program remotely close to the structured tutoring being offered by the eight Learning Centres across Canada. That is why each one of our eight Centres has a waiting list of children asking for our help.

Children on average appear to gain one to two years growth in reading and comprehension, in one year of tutoring. They may gain between one to four years of growth or more, in a test of phonic skills. Keep in mind that these are children who usually begin the program about two years below grade level in reading.

If you have a child or know of a child diagnosed with Dyslexia, it's imperative steps are taken as soon as possible to apply to become enrolled into a tutoring program. Dyslexia is not curable as it's not a disease, but it is a condition that can be overcome with approapriate remedial tutoring. The Scottish Rite Charitable Foundation, Learning Centre for Hamilton, is the facilitor of a free program for the tutoring of Dyslexic children.
