M. W. Bro. Paul E. Todd, The Grand Master of the Grand Lodge of Canada in the Province of Ontario
The Grand Masters Gala
On Friday May 4th the Past Masters' Association of the Hamilton Districts along with the District Deputy Grand Masters of Districts "A", "B" and "C" hosted the Reception and Dinner in honour of the Most Worshipful Brother, Paul E. Todd, Grand Master of the Grand Lodge of Canada in the Province of Ontario. He was accompanied by his Lady Gloria and the Grand Director of Ceremonies, Ed Denbiech and his Lady Wendy.
After countless hours and numerous meetings the Event Committee headed up by W. Bro. Jon Stewart felt we had everything under control. The menu had been set, the food had been ordered, tickets had been sold, the hotel had been contacted and rooms were booked, the programmes were printed, the tables in the Scottish Rite ballroom were decorated and set for 208 guests, the Piper was prepared, the photographers were in place, the International Order of Rainbow Girls were ready to handle the coat check, and Venessa Girard was prepared to entertain us all, and then it happened.
The power for most of the western past of Hamilton went out. We were in darkness. Jolene Poore, the Chef, announced that the dinner would not start for at least 45 minutes after the power was restored. The decision was made to at least take pictures as long as there was natural light. These pictures were taken by W. Bro. Brian Kiernan and R. W. Bro. Glen Notman on the second floor hallway which leads to the Cathedral. The Cathedral was in total darkness save for the emergency lights and could not be used.
After the pictures were taken everyone was asked to return to the Ballroom which was now being lit by the emergency lights and candles on the tables. The President of the Past Masters' Association of the Hamilton Districts, R. W. Bro. John Johnston, welcomed the Grand Master and was able to make a presentation to him and his Lady Gloria Todd, before the batteries of the emergency lights failed. Once the emergency lights went out the fire code regulations state the the building has to be evacuated. R. W. Bro. John Johnston made this announcement and the building was evacuated in an orderly fashion.
